Joseph B. Rose

January 2, 1919 - December 24, 2020

Joseph B. Rose, 101, of Waukegan & Zion passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2020 at Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan. Joe had been living at Rolling Hills Place in Zion since May 2017 and truly enjoyed living there. He was born January 2, 1919 in Ottawa, Illinois. Joe was a member of St. Dismas Catholic Church in Waukegan, a lifetime member of Waukegan Council 731 along with being a 4th Degree Member of Bishop Quarter Assembly 197 of the Knights of Columbus. Joe was also a lifetime member of Branch 53 of the Fleet Reserve Association for whom he held many offices through the years. He retired from the United States Navy in 1970 as a Gunners Mate Chief Master after 30 years of service during which he served aboard numerus vessels, attended many service schools, received several commendations and medals and participated in 3 wars: WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. Joe then finished his degree at Carthage College in 1972 and taught 20 years at Immaculate Conception School in Waukegan. He also spent 20 plus years with the Lake County Adult Education and Adult Literacy Programs teaching and tutoring. Joe was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, friend, neighbor and teacher. Joe had a reputation for storytelling. His sense of humor was endless. He told great jokes and gave detailed accounts of life in the Navy especially aboard ship. He will be sorely missed. Joe is survived by his son, John (Ann) Rose of Warren, Ohio; four granddaughters, Stephany, Ellen, Terese and Mary; many nieces and nephews along with a large step-family acquired though his marriage to Helen Rose including 2 step-sons, James “Jim” (Dawn) Broemelkamp, John “Jack” (Sue) Broemelkamp, step-daughter Joan Stiles, several step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Rose; second wife, Helen Rose; parents, Lawrence and Ellen Rose; brothers, John L. Rose, Michael Rose; sisters, Mary Halm and Ann Teresa Conness. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at Peterson & Patch Funeral Home, 408 N. Sheridan Rd., with the Knights of Columbus service at 7:00 PM and 9:00 AM to time of mass at the church. Thursday, January 7, 2021. Funeral mass will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, January 7, 2021 at St. Dismas Church 2600 Sunset Ave. Waukegan. Interment will be at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville.
