Mary Lou Phipps

August 25, 1932 - August 16, 2017

Mary Lou Phipps of Waukegan, Illinois went to be with the Lord on August 16, 2017. She was surrounded by her family. Mary Lou was born in 1932 in Chicago Illinois, and spent her youth living in Ohio and Michigan, eventually settling in Blissfield Michigan. Mary Lou attended Ohio Wesleyan University where she received a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics and Teaching. On a blind date in 1954, she met her future husband, John Phipps. They were married in 1955, and together they raised three children. Mary Lou was a home maker and part time teacher in the Waukegan Public Schools. She and John provided a loving home and opportunity for their children to explore their interests. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waukegan, where she served as a Deacon and a Trustee. In retirement, she and John spent the winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama, and the rest of year being fabulous grandparents. Mary Lou is survived by her daughters, Patricia Woertz (Gary Woertz), Pamela Bullock (Charles); and son, Alan Phipps (Kathleen Hill); her brother, Fred Hall (Sandy Thompson); ten grandchildren, Amy Thayer (Matthew), Jeremy Woertz, Daniel Bullock (Megan Grove), Joanna Dorsey (Mitchell), Karen Bullock (Mike Pedito), Ian Phipps, Nathan Phipps, Eleanor Woertz, Hannah Phipps, and Maura Phipps; five great-grandchildren, Levi Woertz, Harper Dorsey, Madison Dorsey, Quinn Dorsey, and Charlotte Thayer; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John Phipps; father, Perry Hall; and mother, Kathryn Hall (nee Fleming). In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church to either the Handbells or to the Church Maintenance Fund. Visitation will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Waukegan from 5:30 to 6:30 on Monday, August 21, followed by a memorial service beginning at 6:30. Arrangements are under the care of PETERSON & PATCH FUNERAL HOME.
